Where is Ucluelet, and how is it different from Tofino?
Ucluelet (locals say "Ukee") is a small town on the Ucluelet Peninsula at the south end of the Pacific Rim, about a 40-minute drive from Tofino. The two towns share the same open-ocean coast and the same national park between them, but Ucluelet is smaller, calmer, and more of a working fishing port than a resort town. It sits in the traditional territory of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet First Nation).
If Tofino is the surf-and-scene town, Ucluelet is the one you come to for the coastline itself: the trail, the lighthouse, the storms, and the quiet.
Walk the Wild Pacific Trail
The Wild Pacific Trail is Ucluelet's headline attraction and it's free. The trail runs in sections along the rugged outer shore, threading through wind-bent rainforest to viewpoints right above the surf. The Lighthouse Loop is the easiest and most popular stretch, a short, mostly flat loop that circles Amphitrite Point past the lighthouse and some of the best ocean views on the coast.

The squat concrete lighthouse at Amphitrite Point has guarded the entrance to Barkley Sound since 1915, built to replace an earlier light that a wave swept away. It's the anchor of the Lighthouse Loop and one of the best storm-watching perches on Vancouver Island, close enough to feel the spray when the Pacific is up.

Like Tofino, Ucluelet turns winter weather into the main event. From October through March, big low-pressure systems drive swell and gale-force wind straight onto the exposed headland, and the Wild Pacific Trail puts you safely above it. The same rules apply as anywhere on this coast: stay well back from the water, keep to the trail and the railings, and never turn your back on the waves.

Right on the harbour, the Ucluelet Aquarium is a catch-and-release aquarium: every animal on display is collected locally in spring and returned to the same waters in the fall. It's small, hands-on, and one of the best rainy-day stops in town, especially with kids.
Get out on the water
Ucluelet is the launch point for Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands, a maze of islets in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve that's a bucket-list sea-kayaking trip. Closer to town, the harbour is the base for whale-watching and fishing charters, and the surf beaches of the national park are a short drive north toward Tofino.
