Surfing in Tofino: Best Beaches & Beginner's Guide

Tofino is Canada's surf town, with 35 kilometres of beach break and waves year-round. It's also one of the best places in the country to learn. Here's where to paddle out, how the beaches differ, and what you'll need.

Best beaches for beginners

Cox Bay is the classic learn-to-surf beach. Its forgiving whitewash is ideal for practising pop-ups and finding your feet, and surf schools run lessons and rentals right on the sand. South Chesterman is the other good beginner option — it's more protected, which makes it a calmer place to learn or to boogie board.

Cox Bay vs Chesterman

Cox Bay is the biggest and most consistent beach break in Tofino, which is exactly why it's great on smaller days and too much on big ones. The local rule of thumb: when Cox Bay is overhead and messy, check North Chesterman next — it's a bit more sheltered, so the waves come in a few feet smaller and cleaner.

North Chesterman works year-round, so there's almost always something to ride. South Chesterman is the most sheltered of the three and the mellowest place to start.

When to surf — and what to wear

There are waves in Tofino all year. Winter brings the biggest, most powerful swell (and the storms that generate it), while summer is smaller and friendlier for learning. Whatever the season, the Pacific here stays cold: plan on a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit plus booties, and add gloves and a hood in winter.

You don't need to bring gear — shops in town rent boards and full wetsuits and run lessons for every level.
